As the weather cools and the leaves change color, its time to think about chilly nights and hot buttered rum. This is one of the traditional drinks for our family and most of us leave the rum out. I know, please no hate mail.
1 lb butter
1 qt of vanilla bean ice cream
1 lb brown sugar
1 lb powdered sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
Put the butter in a large bowl and leave out overnight to soften. Leave the ice cream out for a couple of hours to soften as well. You will need to mix the ice cream and butter together so the butter should be considerably softer than the ice cream when you mix. If not, the butter will harden quickly. After the two are mixed together add the rest of the ingredients and mix thoroughly. Put the mixture into containers and place in the freezer until you are ready to use it.
Whenever the mood hits you pull out the mix and add one heaping tablespoon to a cup of boiling water. To that, add one shot of rum if you so desire then hunker down under a warm blanket and enjoy your hot buttered rum.
